Orthodontic Treatments in Adolescence
Orthodontic treatments have come a long way in offering sleeker, more efficient, and more discreet options to straighten smiles and correct misaligned bites. And there’s a reason why it’s most common to see children ages 11 to 15 in braces. That is the age range in which most permanent teeth will have grown in, giving us the best picture possible to what your child will need to straighten their smiles.
If your children started observation appointments early enough with us, it is possible that we have already started to prepare your child for their orthodontic journey. We utilize comprehensive orthodontics to give your child the boost in confidence, and oral health, that comes with a smile they love to show.
What My Child Can Expect During Treatment
The team at Salaita Orthodontics works hard to make your family feel welcome in our office. We do so through our incentive programs, where children can earn tokens for good behavior that they can put toward rewards. They can also join Dr. Salaita’s Smile Squad, a program designed for young children to enjoy their observation appointments through rewards and fun.
When your child gets braces, we will likely schedule appointments every 6 to 8 weeks to check in on progress, address any issues, and make adjustments. Every step of the way, we welcome the questions and concerns of you and your young adult. It is important, even when your child is an adolescent, that they be active members in their own orthodontic treatment. That way, they will be proactive in participating and caring for their teeth for the rest of their life.
Is My Child a Candidate for Orthodontic Treatment?
Every child is different. As their parent, you may notice misaligned teeth while helping them brush or when they smile. This could be an early indication of the need for early orthodontic treatment. However, only an orthodontist like Dr. Salaita can tell whether your child would be a good candidate for braces. It is important to investigate early — even as young as 7 — so we can anticipate what orthodontic issues we need to address.
We can correct issues like misaligned teeth and bites so that normal chewing does not do damage to your child’s teeth over time.

At Salaita Orthodontics, we know that the adolescent years are often the ideal time to begin orthodontic care. Our team is dedicated to creating a treatment plan that fits your teen’s lifestyle — combining effective care with confidence and comfort. Below you’ll find answers to common questions about adolescent treatment at our practice.
Not always. Two-phase treatment combines an early evaluation with a later comprehensive treatment once most permanent teeth are present. If we determine early on that jaw growth, crowding, or bite issues may cause problems, two-phase treatment can help guide development and simplify or even shorten later treatment.
If Phase I is needed, it may begin before all adult teeth erupt. This phase is designed to address growth or jaw concerns, create room for permanent teeth, or correct bite issues.
Once most permanent teeth have erupted (commonly between ages 11 and 16), we apply full braces or aligners to correct alignment, spacing, and bite. At Salaita, our adolescent treatment falls in this phase. Treatment is always tailored to each patient and usually requires regular visits every few weeks for adjustments.
Yes. After braces or aligners are removed, we provide a custom retainer to help keep teeth in their new positions. Retention helps stabilize the smile as bone and surrounding tissues settle.
Absolutely. Many teens lead active lives and continue sports during treatment. We recommend wearing a protective mouthguard — and if needed, we can provide a custom mouthguard that fits over braces.
Yes. With braces or aligners, maintaining careful oral hygiene becomes even more critical. At our practice, we advise brushing and flossing thoroughly — typically after meals and before bed — and we’ll provide guidance on how best to care for teeth and braces during treatment.
Yes — regular dental checkups remain essential. Even with orthodontic treatment underway, continuing routine cleanings and exams helps maintain overall oral health, prevent cavities or gum issues, and support a healthy smile long-term.
